Marathon

We are pretty excited about the new marathon course which includes a complete loop around the new Otaketake Track!! The majority of the course is on the scenic Great Lake Trail, starting and finishing at the Kinloch Domain.

Starting from the Kinloch Domain you will head left onto Mata Place, and follow the roads through to Boojum Dell. From there you will drop into the gully and follow the Boardwalk down to the lake front. Head along the lakefront to the Marina and over the bridge, you will hear the music and MC as you go past the Kinloch Domain.

You will then head along the cliff top reserve to the scenic Whangamata Stream Track. Turn right and follow the stream to the top of the track. Over Lynley's Bridge to return down the stream back to the lake front, taking in the varying scenery (don't forget to have a look at the Water Wheel!).

An easy right turn and you will now begin your picturesque journey on the Great Lake Trail onto the new Otaketake Track through Kawakawa Road to to the Orakau car park. From there you will return via the Great Lake Trail and enjoy the scenery and lake and mountain views, back to the finish line at Kinloch Domain.

Compulsory Gear

After spending a lot of time out on the course and working with our safety experts we have compiled a compulsory gear list for this event. We have beefed it up a bit for your safety, which is our number one priority.

All participants of the Marathon - will be required to have the compulsory gear items at registration. Random gear checks will be carried out at registration and there will also be random checks on Saturday morning at the start line and throughout the course. If you do not have the correct gear you will not be allowed to continue on the course. This is for your own safety. The course takes part in an alpine environment in spring where conditions can change rapidly and you need to be prepared. Please do not underestimate how quickly the weather can change in this region.

The compulsory gear for the marathon is:

  • long sleeve top (polyprop or wool)

  • waterproof seam-sealed jacket

  • beanie (polyprop or wool)

  • gloves (polyprop or wool)

  • survival blanket
