Celebrating 10 Years
When the W2K mountain bike track was built by Bike Taupo linking Kinloch to neighbouring Whakaipo Bay, the late Keith Crate saw an opportunity for the Taupo Half Marathon Society to create a new off-road running event which would complement their long standing Taupo Half Marathon.
On the first Saturday of spring 2009 nearly 1000 keen runners and walkers lined up for the inaugural event, following the newly created track to the top and continuing around the headland loop before heading back into the Kinloch Village – a new event was born.
A quarter marathon (10.5km) was added the following year which took participants in the opposite direction out and back along the beautiful Whangamata Stream track which Keith had also developed.
In 2012 the full off-road marathon was bought into existence. Heading in a new direction again, the marathon participants travelled over the hill to Kawakawa Bay then up Chinaman's Hill to Whangamata Road and back to Kinloch. A 5km & Kids Dash now completes the set of events that is the very popular Kinloch Off-road Challenge.
Over 1000 participants come back each year to enjoy the picturesque course and enjoy the spring weather and picnic atmosphere at Kinloch.
